Oakland's giant freeway interchange, the MacArthur Maze, is a spectacular transportation artery in the San Franicsco Bay Area. Not only is it a wonder of cement, with its arms swooping in all directions, it is a huge presence in my neighborhood. The architectural forms arching toward the sky are impressive at all times of day. Also intense are the sounds of speeding cars and trucks navigating the elevated structure and the space-age clacking of the Bart train coursing through its center. Although many people drive through the maze daily, few are able to stop and consider its beauty or complexity. Like a laybrinth, one can be lost or misdirected from their destination. Trapped when traffic stops, and when flowing there is the dizzying effect of flying over the city of Oakland while trying to negotiate tight tilting curves. The MacArthur Maze is only for automobiles, but there are parks below and a pedestrian bridge nestled inside. One level above the ground, the 34th street bridge crosses the 980 freeway, where most of my images were taken over the last year. I took many pictures, always finding it inspiring and frighteningly beautiful. In my final presentation I have created mirror images, using photoshop. The images are flipped around to accentuate the disorienting feelings I experience while being around the maze itself while contrastingly bringing a sense of balance and reflection. Another perspective, the painted aerial view (USGS) of the Maze, resembles a tradition celtic knot pattern. |
